Mother Ocean

by Cunning Folk

about

Mother Ocean is inspired by mermaid-lore.

lyrics

She's dancing on the shore
Dancing with her friends
A joy like this should never end
To steal from her would be a sin
But sin, for you, is familiar

Now she's tied to the land and she can't understand
What she's lost she cannot find and she looks to the sea

And she sings

'Mother Ocean hear me'

And years pass
pass into the past
and you got too old too fast
and you forgot to lock the key
she looks she finds and then she's away

into the bay she swims like a marlin
you blind old fool you follow her across the horizon
but don't you know there's a sting in her tail
a love like yours was born to fail

And she sings

'Mother Ocean hear me'

and her tears in the sea spray glisten
she calls and the ocean listens

and she's singing to the waves
singing them higher till they drag you down
down down to the ocean floor
till you can't sink no more

now you belong to the sea the land a distant memory
a mermaid's kiss her dream come true
water of life...but not for you

'Mother Ocean hear me'
